Support > Access 2003 Macro Security Settings

Note: To minimise problems, please ensure you have you have the latest updates and patches for Access from

Microsoft Update, see http://update.microsoft.com

From Access 2003 onwards, Microsoft added security measures to the office suite, to prevent malicious code from being run on e.g. word/excel documents attached to spam email.  This unfortunately has the added effect of creating some mild inconvenience when you work with your own custom Access applications.

We digitally sign the program code in our applications with a certificate which verifies that the file has come from us and hasn’t been modified by anyone else.

Opening a digitally signed application in Access 2003

1.     If you do not have all the latest updates and patches for Access from Microsoft Update, you may get a dialog when opening stating - ’Security warning: unsafe expressions are not blocked. Do you want to block unsafe expressions?’

Click Yes. You will then be prompted to reopen Access. The message dialog should not reappear.

2.     When you open Simply Orders you may see the following warning if Macro Security is set to Medium or High (see below for how to check the Macro Security Settings).

Security warning

3.     It should show that the file has been “digitally signed by Synstral Business Software Handelsbolag”.  You can click on the Details Button to see more information regarding our certificate.

4.     If you tick “Always trust files from this publisher and open the file automatically”, you will not be shown this warning again in future.

In Access 2003, you can check the macro security settings as follows...

1.     On the Tools menu, select Macro, then Security (circled in the screenshot below)

2.     In the Macro Security Settings dialog box, we recommend you choose Medium or High (circled in the screenshot below)

When I open Simply Orders: Open Source Edition in Access 2003, how do I prevent it from asking every time if the file is from a trusted source?

Once you make any modifications to the database, Access no longer recognizes it as being signed by our certificate.  This can easily be resolved.

Please click here to see Microsoft’s instructions on how to add your own digital signature (link opens in new window)
